Today, we celebrate what would have been Whitney Houston’s 61st birthday and remember the legacy left behind by “The Voice.”
Born August 9th, 1963, Houston remains one of the most iconic figures in music history. She launched her professional singing career in 1985 with her self-titled album. She became an instant sensation for her breakout singles, such as “Saving All My Love for You,” which won a Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. “How Will I Know” and “Greatest Love of All” were also hits from Houston’s blockbuster debut.
From there, Houston’s career skyrocketed, leading to a follow-up album in 1987, simply titled “Whitney.” Thanks to his classic, Houston became the first female artist to have an album debut at the top of the Billboard 200. “I Wanna Dance with Somebody (Who Loves Me)” secured another Grammy for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. In total, Houston was nominated for 25 Grammy awards, winning six throughout her career.
Not only did Houston excel in music, but she was also a superstar on the big screen. Her inaugural film was “The Bodyguard,” which was released in 1992. The instant hit grossed over $400,000,000 worldwide. Her record from “I Have Nothing” was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song. The movie’s soundtrack also featured Houston’s world-renowned rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” which helped the compilation project become one of the best-selling soundtracks of all time. Other hit films starring Houston include “Waiting to Exhale,” “The Preacher’s Wife,” and “Cinderella” to name a few.
