Cellphone footage has surfaced showing Armando Caballero denying murdering Miya Marcano in the early stages of the investigation.
In the chilling footage released Wednesday, the primary suspect in Marcano’s murder is seen speaking with police and family members after they reported her missing on September 24th. Caballero, who ultimately killed himself before the 19-year-old was found dead, is seen in the video denying any involvement in her murder and seemingly wanting to help the investigation.
“I understand that that is y’all family. But until we figure out what is going on, just don’t beat me up,” Caballero said in the video. He later added, “If I was guilty, why would I be here?”
Another family member chimed in and told Caballero that he put himself in the middle of the situation by coming to the apartment during their search. However, the 27-year-old said that he was only there out of concern.
Marcano had previously rejected Caballero’s romantic advances before her disappearance. Her family also confronted him about his obsessive behavior toward the college student.
“There’s evidence of obsession, of some – you’re obsessed with Miya,” a family member told the man. He also denied these claims, telling the concerned loved ones that the obsession was “not only from my side.”
“I’m not saying that. Obviously, she’s missing,” the family member stated but did not let up on claims that Caballero was pressuring Marcano to date him. She confronted the suspect about sending multiple text messages to Marcano and CashApping her money while claiming the two were not in touch. The man denied saying that.
Caballero worked at the Arden Villas apartment complex as a maintenance employee while Marcano worked in the leasing office. He used the complex’s master key to access the teenager’s apartment on September 24th, thirty minutes before she was scheduled to get off work. He was found dead from suicide on September 27th. Marcano was found dead on October 2nd.
The medical examiner has not yet determined a cause of death but confirmed that Marcano was found with black tape around her wrists.
