Charlamagne Tha God addresses his recent interview with Tyla and admits to disregarding her team’s request.
Earlier this month, Tyla sat down with the hosts of ‘The Breakfast Club’ and had a semi-awkward experience. During the conversation, Charlamagne questioned Tyla on her identity as a “coloured” South African woman. Instead of answering the question, Tyla silently turned to her team who was sitting off-camera and let them respond for her. A woman, assumed to be Tyla’s publicist, made it clear that the singer would not be commenting on her race. This prompted many viewers to speculate that Tyla was denying her blackness, which she later said was a misunderstanding.
However, Charlamagne is now speaking on the situation and explains that he was given a list of topics that he could not mention during the interview, which he ultimately ignored. The radio personality began the discussion with addressing the commenters that said he “blindsided” Tyla with his question.
“All I was doing was trying to give her an opportunity to clear it up because they said that’s been a thing for her,” Charlamagne said on his Brilliant Idiots podcast. “Now here’s the thing about the label…Labels always will come and say ‘hey can you not ask this, can you not ask that.”
He continued, “Sometimes depending what it is like if it’s something like really personal, I’ll be like ‘sure I oblige.’ For this one, I said ‘no.’ The reason I said no, they had six things they didn’t want us to ask.”

He continued, “Sometimes, depending on what it is, like if it’s something really personal, I’ll be like ‘sure, I’ll oblige.’ For this one, I said ‘no.’ The reason I said no is that they had six things they didn’t want us to ask.”
Charlamagne went on to list the topics on the “don’t ask” list, which included Tyla’s interaction with streamer Kai Cenat, her withdrawal from Chris Brown’s tour, dating rumors, and her recent injury.
“So I said to them, ‘no.’ Now, when I say ‘no, I’m not going to oblige any of this,’ it is your job then, label, management, whoever, to either prepare the artist for the question or pull the interview. I’m fine with either. I already told you I’m not going to follow any of this,” Charlamagne said.
He added, “I’m not a d*ck sucker for record labels. I have a job to do, and my job is for the people.”
It’s unclear if Tyla will respond to Charlamagne’s statements, but it is evident that he isn’t bothered by the backlash. See the full interview below:
