Charles Barkley stepped up to do his part against the detrimental effects of the United States Supreme Court’s decision that outlawed affirmative action in college admissions.
The former NBA star handed over a hefty check to provide scholarships for Black students, TMZ reported.
Barkley said he’ll leave $5 million to his alma mater, Auburn, adding, “That’s just my way of trying to make sure Auburn stays diverse. After that ruling yesterday, my phone was blowing up. I was talking to my friends and said, ‘I need to make sure Black folks always have a place at Auburn.’”
The University’s Black student body population consists of a mere 5%.
Last week, the Supreme Court gutted affirmative action by ruling that using race as a factor in deciding who gets into a school violates the Equal Protection Clause of the Constitution. The ruling is also written in a way that it could have far-reaching implications, including in the area of employment.
But thanks to Barkley, Auburn state doesn’t have to worry too much.
