MAGA fanboy, right‑wing star Charlie Kirk stirred outrage this week after seizing on conspiracy claims directed at Austin Fire Chief Joel G. Baker, a Black man referred to disparagingly by Kirk as the “DEI fire chief.” Kirk asserted on his show that Baker’s appointment led to delayed rescue efforts during the Texas Hill Country floods that reportedly killed at least 119 people and left over 160 missing.

Kirk’s punchline? That hiring Baker under diversity initiatives prioritized DEI over competence, allegedly causing loss of life. Kirk even questioned if Baker knew the word “reimbursement,” calling him a “moron” and claiming, “If you hire people based on race, not skill, the little girls die.”
However, the Austin Firefighters Association originally raised concerns, claiming the chief delayed deployment of specialized rescue crews. Chief Baker denied this, stating he only learned of the state’s request on July 4th, not before, and deployed rescue swimmers immediately. He emphasized coordination, resource assurance for Austin, and confirmed additional support in the following days.
Mayor Kirk Watson backed Baker, slamming the firefighters’ claims. Meanwhile, Association President Bob Nicks pointed to an email that apparently canceled Austin’s deployment due to budget worries and reimbursement concerns. Baker clarified that the message was misunderstood and said budget constraints didn’t factor into his decisions.
Instead of stopping there, Kirk ratcheted up the rhetoric, attacking DEI: “When you hire fire chiefs based on race…you get morons.” He claimed Baker’s focus was on making the department “Blacker” instead of “ready for floods.”
This isn’t the first time Kirk’s waged war on DEI as a boogeyman. But dancing atop a tragedy and blaming it on diversity crossed a lot of lines. For Baker, Austin’s first Black fire chief, those accusations aren’t just wrong: they’re hurtful to the families who lost loved ones. This story shows how fast conspiracy theories and race-baiting can drown out real solutions in times of crisis.
