“CBS This Morning” co-host, Charlie Rose, is the latest public figure to be accused of sexual harassment. Eight women have spoken with The Washington Post to detail the host’s history of inappropriate behavior.
Since then, several networks have announced the host’s suspension. According to reports, PBS and Bloomberg announced that they would stop distribution of the “Charlie Rose” show, as CBS separately announced that the host has been suspended from his role on “CBS This Morning” and “60 Minutes.”
“Charlie Rose is suspended immediately while we look into this matter,” the network announced. “These allegations are extremely disturbing we take them very seriously.”
In the Washington Post report, the eight women detailed the host’s mistreatment of women on the “Charlie Rose” show staff. The incidents occurred between the late 1990s and 2011, where Rose reportedly made unwanted sexual advances toward them, from inappropriate phone calls to groping their private areas. Some even mentioned instances where Rose would walk around naked around them.
In turn, Rose released a statement to the post saying, “In my 45 years in journalism, I have prided myself on being an advocate for the careers of the women with whom I have worked.”
“Nevertheless, in the past few days,” Rose continued, “claims have been made about my behavior toward some former female colleagues. It is essential that these women know I hear them and that I deeply apologize for my inappropriate behavior. I am greatly embarrassed. I have behaved insensitively at times, and I accept responsibility for that, though I do not believe that all of these allegations are accurate. I always felt that I was pursuing shared feelings, even though I now realize I was mistaken.”
“I have learned a great deal as a result of these events, and I hope others will too. All of us, including me, are coming to a newer and deeper recognition of pain caused by conduct in the past, and have come to profound new respect for women and their lives,” he said.
The allegations against Rose came from women between the ages of 21 and 37-years-old at the time of the incidents, with “striking commanalities” in their stories, the publication reports. Many also accused him of offering jobs and subsequently putting the women in uncomfortable sexual situations. The networks say they will be investigating the situation.
