Longtime actor Chevy Chase, 78, says he doesn’t “give a crap” about what critics like Pete Davidson have to say about him.
Back in 2018, Saturday Night Live star Pete Davidson went on Howard Stern’s SiriusXM’s The Howard Stern Show and opened up about his feelings about Chase’s behavior.
“F— Chevy Chase,” Davidson said of Chase at the time. “He’s just a genuinely bad, racist person, and I don’t like him.” He went on to criticize Chase’s alleged treatment of SNL creator Lorne Michaels. “It’s disrespectful to Lorne, too, a guy who gave you a career. No matter how big you get, you can’t forget what that guy did for you,” said Davidson.
Davidson’s comments are likely referring to comments Chase made about the run of SNL during an interview with the Washington Post, Yahoo! Entertainment reports.
“I’m amazed that Lorne has gone so low,” Chase said during the 2018 interview. “I had to watch a little of it, and I just couldn’t f—— believe it… That means a whole generation of s––heads laughs at the worst f–– humor in the world. You know what I mean? How could you dare give that generation worse s–– than they already have in their lives? It just drives me nuts.”
But Davidson isn’t the only person who has claimed there are challenges that go with working with Chase. The comedian and actor has allegedly received backlash from his former SNL co-stars. Some have allegedly referred to Chase as a jerk. When asked what he feels about the criticisms made against him in a recent interview, Chase said he doesn’t care. “I guess you’d have to ask them,” Chase told CBS’s This Morning correspondent Jim Axelrod, People reports. “I don’t give a crap!”
Chase continued:” I am who I am. And I like… who I am. I don’t care. And it’s part of me that I don’t care. And I’ve thought about that a lot. And I don’t know what to tell you, man. I just don’t care.”
Chase has been accused of being racist a couple of times in his career. In March 2018, a Donald Glover profile by The New Yorker detailed an incident where Chase allegedly tried to “disrupt [Glover’s] scenes” and make insulting jokes between takes when the two worked together on ‘Community.’ In 2012, Chase was accused of using the N-word during an argument with ‘Community’ creator Dan Harmon. The incident resulted in Chase being forced to issue an apology, Yahoo! Entertainment reports.
