A Chicago police officer allegedly shot and wounded two of his coworkers by mistake while investigating a homicide on Wednesday.
During a press conference, Chicago Police Superintendent David Brown claimed that the officer mistakenly discharged his gun, putting a bullet through one officer’s arm and into the shoulder of another.
Both officers were taken to MacNeal Hospital before being moved to another facility.
According to Brown, the shooting occurred during a homicide investigation when detectives pulled over a car wanted for a possible connection to a homicide.
During the encounter, the suspect resisted arrest, and at that moment, one of the officers accidentally fired his weapon, “lightly striking” the other officers.
According to the Chicago Tribune, the two suspects in the car were apprehended, and a gun was discovered in the vehicle. The officer who unintentionally fired the gun was placed on desk duty while the Civilian Office of Police Accountability examined the incident.
Police say that putting an officer on desk duty during an inquiry like this is standard procedure.
