The Chicago Police Department is now under investigation in relation to the Jussie Smollett attack.
TMZ reports CPD’s Chief of Detectives has opened an investigation after concerns that the force may have been leaking inaccurate information to media. “When there are allegations of information being leaked, an internal investigation has been opened, and we are also looking at our vulnerabilities,” an officer told TMZ.
Smollett’s attorney Mark Geragos says police have been insidiously working to ruin Smollett’s case and his image.
Additionally, “dozens” of workers at Northwestern Memorial Hospital have been fired for improperly reviewing the medical records of Smollett. The 36-year-old was treated at the hospital after he claimed he was the victim of a racist and homophobic attack. According to sources, those employees were terminated after receiving access to the “Empire” actor’s medical chart.
CBS Chicago reports that one of the nurses says it was a misunderstanding, as she never reviewed Smollett’s chart; however she was fired last week. That same nurse believes others, like her, were fired for the same reason.
On Jan. 29, Smollett arrived at Northwestern and claimed he was attacked by two men while walking home from a Subway around 2 a.m. The actor said the men yelled racial slurs at him and threatened his life while pouring an unknown substance on him. The men also put a rope around his neck and beat him. Smollett has since been charged with “staging” the attack.
