The late fashion designer, Virgil Abloh, has been honored with a mural in his hometown of Chicago.
According to Fox 23 Chicago, fellow native Rahmaan Statik created a 15×30 foot graffiti mural of Virgil. Statik created the mural on the interior of the northwest stairwell in Chicago’s Time Out Market.
Statik’s posted the now permanent mural on Instagram with it being seen from several staircases.
Statik is a Chicago-bred renowned visual artist who’s responsible for many pieces and street art such as MF DOOM and Prince. When discussing Virgil with Fox 23 Chicago, Statik says the designer’s death affected him deeply.
“I’m deeply affected when I see any fallen peer artist within my age group that I feel like their career was kinda cut short,” Statik said. “The world will miss what else he had to offer as a creative individual.”
A spokesperson from B_Line Projects, the company that oversaw the project spoke on Virgil’s life and how he impacted their Chicago community.
“Virgil was also somebody who reached back into the community all the way up to his last days. He was communicating with people. Direct messaging them. Texting them,” the spokesperson said.
