During a recent panel at Passion City Church in Atlanta, #ChickFilA CEO #DanCathy encouraged white people to shine a stranger’s shoes amid Black Lives Matter protests.
Cathy’s statement comes as a response to protests taking place to end the killing of black people and people of color at the hands of police.
“I invite folks just to put some words to action here, and if we need to find somebody that needs to have their shoes shined, we need to just go right on over and shine their shoes,” Cathy said on the panel to Gospel Rap Artist #Lecrae as well as Passion City Founder Louie Giglio.
Cathy continued by stating it doesn’t have to be shining shoes, it could be a hug too or anything that expresses a kind heart.
“Whether they got tennis shoes on or not, maybe they got sandals on, it really doesn’t matter,” Cathy continues. “But there’s a time in which we need to have some personal action here. Maybe we need to give them a huge too. … So any expressions of a contrite heart, of a sense of humility, a sense of shame, a sense of embarrassment begat with an apologetic heart, I think that’s what our world needs to hear today.”
Cathy even shared his own experience revealing a time when he gave around 1,500 shoeshine brushes to a Chick-Fil-A staff in the past.
“I bought about 1,500 of these [shoeshine brushes], and I gave them to all our Chick-Fil-A operators and staff a number of years ago,” he shared.
Cathy says he got the idea after he recently heard about some fed up with racism, shining the shoes of an elderly black man at a church in Texas.
Though multiple Chick-Fil-A stores have been looted recently, amid protests following the death of #GeorgeFloyd, Cathy urges white people to not be angry with looting and see it as criminal but to instead understand our frustrations.
“[There’s been] about a dozen Chick-Fil-A restaurants vandalized in the last week, but my plea would be for the white people, rather than point fingers at that kind of criminal effort, would be to see the level of frustration and exasperation and almost the sense of hopelessness that exists on some of those activists within the African-American community,” he added.
