Students were forced to take cover as gunshots struck their bus near East 163rd Street and Trinity Avenue in Morrisania around 2:20 p.m. on Friday. The driver, acting quickly, continued for half a mile to ensure the children’s safety.
At least three bullets hit the bus—one shattering the back window, two striking the side. Inside were half a dozen students, a school bus matron, and the driver. Several outlets have reported that the bus was carrying special needs students. Miraculously, no one was injured.
“He was scared about those kids,” said Jose Polanco, a coworker of the bus driver, to ABC 7 NY.
Authorities believe the bus was caught in the crossfire as four suspects, all dressed in black, exchanged gunfire before fleeing on foot. Police continue searching for the shooters.
The chaotic scene unfolded near a school and playground, prompting a 30-minute lockdown at a nearby educational institution.
New York City Public Schools and the NYPD have not yet commented on the incident.
