The singer recently sat down with the Chosen Journey Radio Show, which airs on Atlanta’s Hot 107.9, where she spoke openly about her past apprehension, previously viewing matrimony as “torture and bondage,” fearing she would end up divorced.
“Before reading the Bible all the way through…I didn’t want to get married,” she explained.
The “No Scrubs” star confessed that her fear of nuptials stemmed from her understanding that it was a sacred commitment created by God.
“I think it was really scary to me because I still, before reading the word understood that, you know, God created marriage. So, I mean, it’s serious. I took it that serious to not ever marry during those years of my life,” she added, also admitting that she believed a marriage would end in divorce.
The 53-year-old even joked that if she ever did marry, she would “have [her] lawyer on speed dial.”
Luckily, her views have since evolved, and she now sees marriage in a positive light. Years after her high-profile romance with Usher and even a dating show, “What Chilli Wants,” the Grammy-Award winner has found love with actor Matthew Lawrence. The smitten pair have been an item since 2022, with both expressing interest in tying the knot.
Last May, Chilli revealed during an appearance on the “Portia Show” that Lawrence also helped her overcome her fear of tying the knot, calling him a “good guy” who “checks off all of my list.”
