Chinese Hackers Target U.S. Telecoms in Massive Spy Operation, Affecting Both Political Figures and Civilians

White House cybersecurity official Anne Neuberger revealed that Chinese hackers have infiltrated at least eight U.S. telecom companies, accessing texts, calls, and sensitive systems.

Companies named include AT&T, Verizon, and Lumen Technologies, with five others unidentified. The hacking campaign, called “Salt Typhoon,” has been active for two years and targets telecom systems globally. Hackers have accessed call records, live calls, and systems, targeting high-ranking officials, including those from both presidential campaigns. Donald Trump’s calls were accessed in the breach. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer was also among those compromised in the hack.

While the FBI says the breach heavily focused on Washington, D.C., Neuberger highlighted that the attack had a broader reach, potentially affecting the communications of everyday Americans. However, the White House maintains that classified information was not impacted. Even more unsettling, the U.S. believes the hackers still have access due to unaddressed cybersecurity gaps. Efforts to notify affected Americans are underway, but not all victims will be informed.

“Until U.S. companies address cybersecurity gaps, the Chinese are likely to maintain their access,” Neuberger stated.

A Senate Commerce subcommittee is scheduled to hold a hearing on December 11th to discuss “Salt Typhoon,” the security threats facing communications networks, and examine best practices. Tim Donovan, CEO of the Competitive Carriers Association, will be present during this meeting.

So far, China denies involvement and calls the accusations baseless.  Meanwhile, the U.S. and its allies have released guidelines to help telecom companies protect against further attacks.
