A remote kissing device is being advertised as a way to allow long-distance couples to maintain physical intimacy. The Chinese gadget is causing quite a stir on the internet.
The device is equipped with warm, moving silicon “lips” that mimic a real kiss by recreating the movement, pressure, and temperature of a user’s lips, according to CNN. In addition to duplicating the feel of a kiss, it can transmit kissing sounds.
To send a kiss, users download an app on their phone and plug the device into their phone’s charging port. Next, they pair up with their partner on the app and initiate a video call. From there, users can transmit the replica kisses back and forth.
Jiang Zhongli, the lead inventor, was quoted by China’s state-run outlet Global Times that the device’s inspiration came from his experience with a long-distance relationship in college.
“In my university, I was in a long-distance relationship with my girlfriend, so we only had contact with each other through the phone,” he said. “That’s where the inspiration of this device originated.”
In addition to sharing kisses between partners, the app allows users to send anonymous kisses to strangers. Once two users match up and decide they like each other, they can ask to share kisses.
Kisses can also be uploaded by users for others to download.
The device retails for 288 yuan, which is about $41 US.
So far, the reaction to the device has been mixed, with some giving thanks for the invention and others calling it creepy.
