Minneapolis reached a wrongful death settlement with George Floyd‘s family for $27 million, just weeks before the trial is set to begin for the former officer Derek Chauvin, charged with murder in Floyd’s death.

According to NBC News, the settlement was unanimously approved by the City Council on Friday, after the matter was added to its agenda for a closed session.

The approved settlement includes a $500,000 contribution from Floyd’s family to the community at the intersection of 38th and Chicago Avenue, which is now widely regarded as “George Floyd Square.”

The Floyd family filed a federal lawsuit in July of 2020 against the city of Minneapolis and the four officers involved in the arrest that resulted in George’s death.

The lawsuit took issue with the cops’ treatment of Floyd, including the neck restraints and the police officers’ training and policies. The family was seeking compensatory and special damages in an amount that a jury would determine at trial.

Derek Chauvin is the first officer set to stand trial in Floyd’s death. He has been charged with second-degree murder and manslaughter, as well as third-degree murder. Jury selection is underway, with 6 of the 12 jurors already seated as of this morning.
