Rightfully so, Donald Trump is being sued for using the term “China virus.” According to a new lawsuit, the term caused a lot of harm to Chinese Americans.
According to Fox Bangor, Trump is being sued by the Chinese American Civil Rights Coalition. The group is upset that Trump kept referring to the coronavirus as the “Chinese virus,” “Wuhan virus,” and “Kung flu” during his presidency.
TMZ obtained a copy of the lawsuit that said Trump’s choice of derogatory terms aided in the rise of violence on Chinese and Asian Americans.
In a March 2020 speech, Trump chose to use the “Chinese virus” rather than “coronavirus.” The CACRC says he should have known better to use the term since it’s unknown where the virus originated.
The group also says that Trump’s consistent use of the phrase was a dog whistle to his supporters and helped aid in the harm against them.
Trump is being sued for defamation and infliction of emotional distress. The CARC wants him to hand over $1 for every Asian American and Pacific Islander living in the United States, around $22.9 million.
They would like to use the funds to build a museum that showcases the history and contributions of AAPI to the U.S.
