Duke’s Coach Mike Krzyzewski won his 1,000 Sunday, January 25, 2015 against St. Johns at Madison Square Gardens in New York. It was a come back win for the Blue Devils who won 77-68. Coach K is the first coach in NCAA Men’s Basketball history to win 1,000 games. It was a sell out game that showed the competitiveness of Duke.
Coach K entered his 35th season at Duke knowing this milestone was coming. As Duke went undefeated until ACC play, the guess was that his 1,000 win would come at Louisville. After losing back-to-back games at North Carolina State and at home to Miami the next prediction was at St. Johns.
Krzyzewski first career win came back in 1975 against Lehigh while he was coaching at West Point in New York. He coached there from 1975-1980 where then he took over at Duke as head coach. Since 1980, he has been at Duke where he has won the rest of his career games including National Championships, ACC Championships, Coach of the Year awards, and plenty more.
Some career milestone for Coach K is as followed; career win 100 vs Clemson on Feb. 2 1982, win 200 vs 18 Alabama on Dec. 13 1986. Career win 500 came against in North Carolina Tarheels who were number 3 on Feb. 28, 1998 and 100 wins later he beat UNC again.
Coach K has won 4 National Championships in the years 1991, 1992, 2001, and 2010. As a coach he has appeared in 11 Final Fours and has been ranked number 1 12 times. He has also coached Team USA 9 times and in 2014 win the Gold Medal in Spain. 5 time ACC Coach of the Year, 3 time Naissmith Coach of the Year, and 2 time Basketball Times National Coach of the Year, Coach K was inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001 and the College Basketball Hall of Fame in 2006.
We would like to say Congrats to Coach K on another career milestone and as Duke’s shirt said after the game, 1,000 and counting.
