Coast Guard Believes They've Located More Human Remains In Titan Submersible Debris

Coast Guard marine safety engineers assigned to the Marine Safety Center in Washington D.C., working for the Marine Board of Investigation for the Titan submersible case, conduct a survey of the aft titanium endcap from Titan in the North Atlantic Ocean Oct. 1, 2023. The Coast Guard has recovered what they believe to be human remains from the tragic Titan submarine implosion.

On Tuesday, the agency announced the discovery of the remains, which were found within the debris of the Titan submersible. The devastating implosion took place while the controversial vessel took five visitors to see the Titanic, which is about 13,000 feet below sea level at the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. A five-day search for the sub ensued, though the vessel likely imploded not long after it went down into the sea.

The latest excavation brought the last of the debris from the accident. The Coast Guard says the remains were transported to experts, who will examine them and confirm if they are actually those of the victims who died instantly when the water crushed the sub. This also raises questions about the condition of the remains. With implosions, bodies are said to disintegrate rapidly before the person even realizes there is an issue. Therefore, one can assume that the “human remains” located are small bone or tissue fragments. Nevertheless, that is something the scientists will determine in the coming weeks or months.

Several waivers were signed by the passengers prior to their departure. Therefore, whether or not a civil lawsuit can be filed against Oceagate, which owned and operated the Titan, remains to be seen. Several legal experts have debated this, with some believing the families can take legal action despite the victims knowing the risks.

Let’s continue to keep the loved ones of this tragedy in our thoughts and prayers.
