Colin Kaepernick is still hoping to make his NFL return.
Though he hasn’t played since 2016, the 37-year-old continues to train relentlessly.
“All day, every day,” his longtime girlfriend Nessa Diab told TMZ, adding, “Nothing has changed…it’s all up to the teams if they’ll let him play.”
Kaepernick believes he was blackballed after kneeling during the national anthem to protest racial injustice, a stance he still stands by. In 2023, he revealed to Sports Illustrated that people “may have forgotten what I was capable of doing on the field,” but hoped for a shot based on skill, “not the political bias that you have.”
After Aaron Rodgers tore his Achilles in 2023, Kaepernick wrote to then-Jets GM Joe Douglas, pitching himself as a “risk-free contingency plan.” In the letter, he offered: “Worst case scenario, you see what I have to offer and you’re not that impressed. Best case scenario, you realize you have a real weapon…I would wear that responsibility like a badge of honor.” Unfortunately, he never got a workout with the team.
Meanwhile, Chargers coach Jim Harbaugh claimed he discussed a coaching role with Kaepernick, but Kaepernick refuted it on The Tonight Show, saying, “I found out the same way everyone else did, on social media…No, no coaching offer.”
His last game was January 1st, 2017, throwing for 215 yards and a touchdown. The former 49ers QB totaled 12,271 yards, 72 TDs, and a Super Bowl appearance in his six-year NFL career.
