An 18-year-old Southeastern Louisiana University student was arrested for stabbing a man she was dating.
According to PEOPLE, Elizabeth Grace Johnson faces charges of aggravated battery after stabbing Draven Upchurch multiple times.
Campus police received calls of a disturbance coming from one of the campus dorms, WAFB News reported. Upon arrival, authorities found the victim—a Louisiana State University student—suffering from stab wounds.
Johnson was still inside the dorm room when police arrived, and both were taken to the hospital. Johnson was later arrested.
Doctors listed Upchurch in critical condition and remained hospitalized for surgery, the police report stated.
His mother, Angie Fasullo, has given updates on her business Facebook page, Honey’s Snoball shack of Abita. She also informed readers that her son was stabbed eight times and was unresponsive when helped arrived.
“The intake surgery lasted 4+ hours,” she posted. “During this time all of his blood, and then some, was put back into his body, 3 small portions of one of his lungs was removed, his stomach was repaired, and a small section of his colon removed. Draven coded twice.”
As of a Wednesday post, his mother said he underwent a second surgery and made more improvements. He was also taken off a ventilator. Authorities do not know a motive for the stabbing.
Southeastern Louisiana university released a statement on Thursday calling the stabbing an “isolated incident” and said that the “criminal justice process is ongoing.”
“This incident currently remains under investigation, and the student will go through the proper university disciplinary process as well as the criminal justice system process. The university process may result in disciplinary measures up to and including expulsion, but that is not yet complete,” the statement reads. “While the incident remains under investigation, the student has been placed on interim suspension from the University, which bars access to campus and class pending disciplinary resolution.”
Johnson has since bonded out of Tangipahoa Parish Jail.
