Producer OVO 40 is not here for the disrespect that’s being thrown at Drake.
Recently, while speaking with Peter Rosenberg on their Juan Ep podcast, comedian DJ Cipha Sounds shared a story about his run-in with OVO 40. According to Sounds, the producer confronted him in the DM after footage surfaced that showed Sounds performing stand-up comedy to Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us,” which was a diss track aimed at Drake.
“How about I go to your city and play a song where someone calls you a ped*phile,” OVO 40 allegedly said. “It’s on sight, when I see you, I’m gonna smack you in the mouth.”
Shortly after, a clip of Sounds recounting the incident went viral and made waves throughout social media. This prompted the DJ/comedian to address the situation and make some things clear.
“Here’s the deal, first of all I’ve been going to Toronto since 1998. It’s my second home. I got so many friends there. So much family, I love the city,” he said in an Instagram video. “People that know me know that I’m not no f*cking f*ck face idiot that would go to Toronto and play “Not Like Us.” That is a stupid thing to do. ”
He continued, “I did some shows with Dave Chappelle in Toronto two weeks ago. Some pictures of those shows went up. This kid that’s now helping me with my social media, brand new just hired him, put up the pictures from that show and put the Kendrick Lamar song underneath and I was like ‘uh oh. Woah. Don’t do that. Craziness.’ Called him, said ‘hey that’s a dumb dumb move. Take it down.’ He was like ‘I thought it would be funny.’ It wasn’t take it down. Took it down immediately, pictures are back up. Had a great time in Toronto.”
Sounds ended his video admitting that OVO 40 was upset about the situation but despite the producer’s feelings, he hopes he can eventually have an adult conversation with OVO 40.
“40 was mad at me,” Sounds said. “I’m hoping that man to man, we can still have this conversation. I told the story on my podcast because I was hurt about what happened. Hopefully we can talk it out. I don’t want no smoke, I don’t want no drama. Love the guy, big fan. Again, I will never be disrespectful. I did not play the song in Toronto. I wasn’t even djing, I was doing stand-up comedy.”
OVO 40 has been a longtime supporter, so it’s not difficult to understand his frustration with the situation. In fact, OVO 40 can be credited with helping mold the rapper’s distinctive sound, especially on projects like “So Far Gone.”
