Common has a few thoughts on the Kendrick Lamar and Drake beef, reflecting on what he believes was a great matchup.

The Chicago rapper sat down with Carmelo Anthony and Mero for their “7PM In Brooklyn” podcast, where he voiced that lyricism and wordplay are essentials in diss tracks. The “Go” artist praised both Lamar and Drake for the way they went at one another, but did admit that there is such a thing as “too far,” though he doesn’t believe Lamar and Drake went below the belt.

“For me, I wasn’t like, ‘This was too far.’ I was like ‘Damn, this is really incredible battle,'” he shared.

He also said that his key takeaways from the epic lyrical tournament were to know your opponent and be prepared for what they might bring.

“This battle, to me, was a heavyweight. They was going back and forth…I respected what each one delivered,” he added.

Common is familiar with Drake’s pen from a firsthand perspective.  The two sprawled years ago, with Common dropping “Sweet” in early 2012, which was aimed at Aubrey.  Champagne Papi responded to his fellow rapper on the smash single “Stay Schemin.” It’s unclear why the two had issues, though some have speculated that it had something to do with Serena Williams, whom Common dated from 2007 to 2010. Drake was rumored to be dating the tennis star sometime in 2011.
