One suspect is dead, and three others are still on the loose after a vicious shootout in a Compton smoke shop.
Video footage released by the sheriff’s department shows 23-year-old Kahlel Lundy, 21-year-old Keith Rachel, and two other men attempting to rob a smoke shop last month located in the 1500 block of S. Wilmington Avenue.
In the footage, Lundy and Rachel can be seen going up to the counter, which a guard was watching. Not too long after, two other men come into the shop. Suddenly, one of the men pulls out a gun and starts firing shots at the guard. When the guard returns fire, the three men scatter and run toward the front of the store. Some continued to shoot at the guard as they ran away toward the shop’s entry.
The men dropped to the ground and continued to shoot at the guard, who also was shooting back.
After the incident, one of the robbers who’d been shot was taken to the Martin Luther King Hospital to be treated. Police went to the hospital in response to hearing a man was under care for a gunshot wound. The news outlet reports investigators later learned the man was involved in the armed robbery, but after being treated, the man passed away from his injuries.
Lundy and Rachel have yet to be caught, with a third suspect now arrested, ABC7 Los Angeles reports. The guard had to be hospitalized for gunshot wounds to the face and neck. He’s since been released.
