Condomless Male Birth Control To Be Available In 2018

A new study called Vasalgel, plans to initiate a reversible birth control injection for men in 2018.

Vasalgel is a gel that will be injected into the penis. Once it’s injected it blocks sperm from leaving the vas deferens. In essence, vasalgel is a temporary vasectomy. Its main advantage over vasectomy: It is hoped that it will be more readily reversible, and there is no cutting into the vas deferens involved.

On Tuesday, a study was released stating that 12 male rabbits were injected with Vasalgel. As a result, 11 were found to be sperm free for an entire year after the injection. Researchers believe the results can be even longer in men.

“We expect [that time frame] to be similar in men, but that is just a minimum. It seems to be pretty durable; we expect it to last for years. We just don’t know how many yet,” said Elaine Lissner, executive director of the Parsemus Foundation, the organization that developed the drug to Cosmopolitan.com.

According to Lissner, the human trial is scheduled to take place next year and should last for six months. A main factor in the human trials will be training physicians to administer the injection.
