Live Nation Entertainment Inc. is facing questions from lawmakers about its role in the Astroworld tragedy in Texas.
According to the Associated Press, the House Oversight and Reform Committee is launching an investigation into the multibillion-dollar company.
In a letter to Live Nation Entertainment Inc. president and CEO, Michael Rapino, the Congressional committee members wrote: Live Nation Entertainment (Live Nation) was the concert promoter reportedly responsible for “planning, staffing, putting up the money, securing permits, finding vendors, communicating with local agencies,” for Astroworld Festival.
“Recent reports raise serious concerns about whether your company took adequate steps to ensure the safety of the 50,000 concertgoers who attend Astroworld Festival,” Democratic and Republican leaders of the committee wrote in a letter to Rapino. “Reports indicate that security and medical staff were inexperienced or ill-equipped to deal with mass injuries. Some attendees stated that the placement of barricades made it difficult to escape. Experts have stated the Astroworld Festival organizers failed to heed warning signs.”
The committee is asking Live Nation and Rapino for details on the company’s role and responsibility in security, crowd control, and safety at the festival. They’re also looking for more information about the pre-show security planning, the “precise time Live Nation was first made aware of casualties on the evening of November 5, and what steps were taken in response to that information.”
Live Nation is said to be working with local authorities in their investigation and would also share information with the committee. “Saftey is core to live events, and Live Nation engages in detailed security planning in coordination with local stakeholders including law enforcement, fire, and EMT professionals,” the company said in a statement.
The committee has set January 7, 2021, for Live Nation to provide the information.
