As most of us are quarantined at home, Louis Angel Ortiz, 42, decided to quarantine inside a shuttered New Haven, Connecticut Cuban restaurant, Soul De Cuba Café.
Like many restaurants, the café closed its doors due to COVID-19. On a routine check, a manager discovered Ortiz inside the café asleep with a bottle of rum. Authorities were able to confirm from the surveillance system, Ortiz broke into the café on Saturday and spent four days helping himself to thousands of dollars worth of food, liquor, and beer. ⠀
People.com also reports Ortiz removed property and beverages from the café. It has not been reported where he took these items. “Management estimated the loss of food and beverage at several thousand dollars,” police said in a statement. “The loss includes an estimated 70 bottles of stolen or consumed liquor.”
According to online records, Ortiz is being held at New Haven Correctional Center on a $10,500 bond. He will return to court on May 27. He is being charged with burglary, larceny, and criminal mischief. He is being charged with failure to appear in court on an unrelated matter.
At the time of the report, People.com was unable to locate an attorney to speak on Ortiz’s behalf.
