Conor McGregor is setting his sights on Ireland’s highest office and he’s taking an unorthodox route to get there. On Monday, the MMA icon publicly declared his intention to run for President of Ireland and launched a petition to bypass the country’s nomination system.
“I, Conor McGregor hereby declare my intention to seek the esteemed office of President of Ireland,” he wrote. “The current constitutional framework however presents a significant barrier to democratic participation.”
To officially run, McGregor needs endorsements from 20 members of Ireland’s national parliament or four county councils. With political support likely out of reach, he’s turning directly to the people.
“This system… inadvertently restricts the direct voice of the Irish electorate,” he explained. “I propose a petition advocating for a modification of the nomination process to allow my name be included on the ballot.”
He’s urging citizens in Ireland and across the Irish diaspora to sign the petition, arguing that people, not politicians, should decide who’s allowed to run.
While there’s no official process in place that lets a petition override Ireland’s election laws, McGregor’s already drawn thousands of signatures. His next move? Staying in the public eye and using his platform to apply pressure.
