On Wednesday, #AlexandriaOcasioSmollett began trending on Twitter after conservatives compared Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez fearing for her life during the January 6 Capitol riots to actor Jussie Smollett, who allegedly staged an attack on himself.
OAN journalist Jack Prosobiec fact-checked Ocasio-Cortez’s Instagram Live account of the Capitol events and called her out for not being in the Capitol while it was under attack. Ocasio-Cortez talked about fearing for her life as pro-Trump supporters laid siege to the Capitol building in the hour and a half Live. At the time, she was in her office, located in the larger Capitol complex, but not where the dome, the House, and the Senate are located.
However, the building that houses Ocasio-Cortez’s office was evacuated after unusual packages were discovered nearby. Police found pipe bombs and Molotov cocktails in the area.
Ocasio-Cortez, never one to hold her tongue, clapped back at Prosobiec.
“This is the latest manipulative take on the right,” she tweeted. “They are manipulating the fact that most people don’t know the layout the Capitol complex.”
“We were all on the Capitol complex – the attack wasn’t just on the dome,” she continued. “The bombs Trump supporters planted surrounded our offices too.”
In the thread, she explains that the rioters were attempting to infiltrate the office building, which was part of why everyone was evacuated. The rioters “tried to gain access and share location info on finding members for physical harm.”
People were trying to rush and infiltrate our office buildings – that’s why we had to get evacuated in the first place.
The attempts of attackers & publicly available communications show how they tried to gain access and share location info on finding members for physical harm.
