In Oakland, California, a construction crew found a mummified body in the wall of a historic building scheduled to be remodeled.
On Wednesday, police reported to the Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center after a constriction worker found what looked like a human body lodged into the wall, NBC News reports.
“We found remains best described as mummified,” said Lt. Ray Kelly of the Alameda County Sheriff’s Office. “The conditions in the walls were such that the body was preserved in good conditions.” The next step, Kelly says, is to take fingerprints from the body to determine how long the person has been there and who the person is.
Kelly says there are a wide array of answers. “Any theory is possible. It could be anything from someone who got in behind the wall and became trapped and died to someone put the person there. God only knows,” says Kelly.
