Convicted Rapist Accidentally Released From Georgia Prison; Manhunt Underway

A convicted rapist has been accidentally released from a prison in Georgia.

Police are on the search for 31-year-old Tony Maycon Munoz-Mendez, a man who was released from prison “in error,” according to a statement from the Georgia Department of Corrections. The man was mistakenly released from Rogers State Prison at 11:30 a.m. on Friday.

According to records, Munoz-Mendez started serving his life sentence back in April 2015. Munoz-Mendez was convicted of rape and aggravated child molestation.

USA Today reports that the Department of Corrections is reviewing the circumstances surrounding Munoz-Mendez’s release, as the statement released by the department does not say what led to Munoz-Mendez’s release. Munoz-Mendez is described as 5 feet 9 inches and 186 pounds, according to the Department of Corrections.

“All resources are being utilized to ensure the rapid apprehension of Munoz-Mendez, including the Georgia Department of Corrections Fugitive Unit and US Marshals,” the Department of Corrections said in its statement.
