A massive recall is underway after consumers found more than just meat inside their corn dogs. The Hillshire Brands Company is pulling back nearly 58 million pounds of corn dog and sausage-on-a-stick products due to contamination with pieces of wood.
The USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed the recall on September 27th after Hillshire received several consumer complaints, including five reports of injury. An internal investigation revealed that wooden sticks accidentally entered the battering process before coating.
“These products should not be consumed,” FSIS warned, advising anyone with concerns to speak with a healthcare provider.
The recalled items were produced between March 17th and September 26th and include products sold under Jimmy Dean, State Fair, and an unbranded label. They were shipped nationwide to grocery stores, food service providers, schools, and military bases.
Affected packages are marked with establishment numbers “EST-582” or “P-894.” Schools received these items through commercial sales, not through the USDA’s National School Lunch Program.
Consumers are urged to toss the affected products or return them to where they were purchased. Questions can be directed to Hillshire’s customer care at 888-747-7611 or the USDA hotline at 888-674-6854.
