Those looking to get a passport will be faced with an increase in fees.
Beginning December 27th, the fee for a U.S. passport will increase by $20 for all customers. In a tweet on Monday, December 20th, the U.S. State Department called the price hike “necessary” in order to keep producing the travel document.
Adults paying for a passport renewal by mail will now pay $130 instead of $110. This is only one instance. Other factors can increase the cost, including obtaining a new passport and having it rushed.
The increase in price comes as the government takes steps to make the overall passport procedure more efficient. This week it was announced that Americans could begin renewing their passports online. On December 13th, President Joe Biden directed the State Department to “design and deliver” a brand new passport renewal experience. Those who wish to take advantage of online renewal must be 16-years or older and living in the United States. The passport being renewed can not have expired more than 15 years ago, and the online portal is only good for tourist passports. Diplomatic or official passports must adhere to the original regulations.
