It has been revealed during a World Health Organization briefing that COVID-19 is not subjected to seasonal changes. Instead, as Reuters reported, the current coronavirus pandemic is expected to be ‘one big wave’ that America should prepare for.
WHO spokesperson Margaret Harris reiterated this message during the briefing Tuesday.
“We are in the first wave. It’s going to be one big wave. It’s going to go up and down a bit. The best thing is to flatten it and turn it into just something lapping at your feet.”
Harris’s message is a contradiction to the previous message given to America. It was previously reported that health officials predicted that the disease would hinder itself in the summer due to the heat, and gradually pick back up in the fall.
In reality, May through now has only seen a surplus in the amount of positive COVID-19 cases across the southern region, while cases also continue to rise internationally.
“People are still thinking about seasons. What we all need to get our heads around is this is a new virus, and…this one is behaving differently. Summer is a problem. This virus likes all-weather,” Harris continued.
Harris also expressed her concerns regarding COVID-19 cases aligning with “flu season” during winter in the southern hemisphere. She states that, thus far, lab samples have yet to show a high number of flu cases, which suggests a “later-than-normal” start to the season.
“If you have an increase in a respiratory illness when you already have a very high burden of respiratory illness, that puts even more pressure on the health system,” Harris added.
