Antoine Demoitié, 25, died Sunday from injuries he sustained after being struck by a motorcycle.
The Belgian cyclist was competing in the Gent-Wevelgem classic and as the race moved through northern France with just 115 kilometers remaining, Demoitié and four other cyclists collided and fell. As Demoitié lay on the ground, he was then struck by a race motorbike that was following behind.
Demoitié was transported to a hospital in Ypres, then taken to the intensive care unit of the university hospital in Lille where it was said his condition was “extremely serious.” He later succumbed to his injuries. His wife and family were at his side.
“The rider died. An inquiry is under way to determine the circumstances,” Frederic Evrard, spokesman for the Nord-Pas-de-Calais regional gendarmerie in France, said late on Sunday just after midnight local time.
