Last week, D.L. Hughley sat down with Angela Yee and friends on her ‘Lip Service’ podcast to discuss his longstanding success and his outlook on life, amid the trial and tribulations throughout his career. During the conversation, Hughley divulged about the tragic death of his son, who was conceived through infidelity.
“So I had knocked this chick up and she had the baby and the baby got killed by her boyfriend,” the comedian revealed. “So, it was a horrible, horrible experience. I had this baby I’m paying for. I’m a boy. I’m scared. I’m married. I’m just starting out my career, and I get a call from my boy and he said, ‘Your son is in the hospital,’ and I go…So I get to the hospital, and this boy was lying in the bed and apparently her boyfriend had shaken him and damaged his brain.”
Amid dealing with the tragic loss of his son, the comedian explained how he divulged to his wife his infidelity, in addition to a baby and now, the death of the baby.
“I knew that one day I would be man enough to tell my woman what happened,” he said, adding that he believed children should never be left without a parent. “Finally one day, I tell my wife. You know what she said to me? ‘I wish you would’ve told me and we could’ve went through this together.”
Years after finally revealing his affair and subsequent loss, the comedian and his wife ran into the then-mistress at the airport. He then introduces his wife to the woman, to which his wife says to her, “I’m so sorry for your loss.”
Hughley then revealed that the incident changed how he interacts with other people and ultimately brought him closer to his wife. He now takes into consideration how his actions affect others.
