DaBaby is making headlines again, this time for a court battle that’s taking an unexpected turn. The rapper is pleading with a Los Angeles Superior Court judge to reconsider a decision that refused to postpone his upcoming civil trial over an alleged assault incident. The reason? His attorney is grappling with a “life-threatening and rare disease,” leaving him unfit to work.
This legal tussle traces back to a complaint by 65-year-old Gary Pagar, who claims he rented his Los Angeles property to DaBaby and his crew in 2020 under strict house rules. However, things took a left turn when DaBaby allegedly hosted over 40 people for a music video shoot, contrary to their agreement. Pagar alleges that when he confronted DaBaby about the breach, the encounter escalated, resulting in physical assault and severe injury, including multiple lost teeth. Following the incident, DaBaby reportedly fled before police could respond.
As the lawsuit demands compensation for Pagar’s injuries and property damage, it intersects with DaBaby’s criminal charges of felony battery. With the civil case dragging on and a fixed trial date of September 3, Pagar has expressed his frustration over the delays and is pushing for the trial to proceed as scheduled.
However, DaBaby’s defense is in disarray as his lawyer’s health deteriorates. Initially expected back at work by September 2024, recent developments on March 27, 2024, indicate a grimmer prognosis, with the need for aggressive treatment and surgeries stretching his recovery out until April 2025.
Despite these challenges, the court previously declined to reschedule the trial, citing a lack of mention of these medical issues in the original motion and pointing out the lawyer’s other scheduled trials out-of-state. The court remains open to reconsideration only if both parties can reach a stipulation regarding the lawyer’s health.
Now, DaBaby is requesting the judge to delay the trial to give his lawyer the necessary time to recover, emphasizing the severity and sudden progression of his illness. The outcome remains uncertain as both legal and personal dramas unfold.
