A Denver dad who was booted from his return flight from the Dominican Republic has died, making him the latest tourist to die in the country.
According to Fox31, Khalid Adkins traveled to DR with his daughter last week and suddenly became sick while there. When Adkins attempted to return to the U.S., he was forced to get off the plane after he had vomited in the plane’s bathroom.
Reports claim that before heading to the airport on Sunday, Adkins was reportedly injected with an unknown medication at a Dominican hospital so that he could be allowed to board his flight. Even with that injection, Adkins illness forced him to disembark.
Adkins’ sister-in-law Marla Strick later told the news station he was hospitalized in the Dominican capital of Santo Domingo before he died. “They transferred him to Santo Domingo and [said] that his breathing is really bad and that his kidneys were failing,” she said.
“He said, ‘They pulled me off the plane and made me go to the hospital,’” Strick, told the news station KDVR.
Strick also said he was, “dripping sweat and went to the bathroom to throw up and that’s when they kicked him off the plane.” His family said Adkins was forced to stay alone at a Dominican hospital, where he was vomiting and screaming in pain.
Doctors reportedly told the family, during his hospitalization, that they would try to find dialysis in Santo Domingo or air ambulance him to the States. However, Strick said the Adkins’ family had a difficult time communicating with the staff at the hospital and were unsure of a diagnosis as of Tuesday evening.
Now, in the wake of Adkins’ death, the family is working to raise money to take a $20,000 medevac flight home via a GoFundMe page.
“We found out this morning that he passed away last night!! I am at a loss for words we have no explanation of what happened all they will say is he get sick!!” the page said.
