Danielle Spencer, who brought sass, wit, and charm to the role of Dee Thomas on the beloved 1970s ABC sitcom What’s Happening!!, has died at the age of 60.
Her former co-star Haywood Nelson confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that Spencer passed away Monday at a hospital in Richmond, Virginia.
Spencer’s life after television was marked by resilience. In 2014, she was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a double mastectomy. Four years later, she faced another serious health scare, undergoing emergency brain surgery to stop bleeding. The procedures, coupled with ongoing care, led to the creation of a GoFundMe page to help cover her medical expenses.
“She suffered for a very long time but did it with a great deal of courage,” Nelson said, remembering her both as a co-star and a friend.
In addition to acting, Spencer pursued a career in veterinary medicine, showing the same dedication and compassion she displayed on screen. To fans, however, she’ll always be remembered as Dee — the quick-witted little sister who kept Roger and his friends on their toes.
Her passing marks the loss of yet another iconic face from classic Black television, leaving behind a legacy of laughter, strength, and perseverance.
