Lil Dicky is stretching his limbs with a series on FXX that he hopes will transcend his comedic rap alter ego.
Lil’ Dicky quickly took us by storm as the in-your-face, raunchy, and hella funny rapper who is always ready to educate you about the environment. But now, Dicky wants to re-introduce himself as Dave Burd, which is his real name, as he embarks on his new journey of being an actor. “I’m sick of being called Lil Dicky when I meet a person,” Burd says.
In an interview with Variety at the Television Critics Association press tour in January, Burd discussed his new series, “Dave,” and why he now wants to revert back to his birth-given name. “I love being a rapper, and I picked the perfect rap name, but I’m certainly Dave. That’s who I am. Lil Dicky is one of my major projects — probably the biggest project Dave will ever conceive — but I think the show is about the guy behind Lil Dicky, who I really feel everyone might appreciate.”
The comedy series is loosely based on Burd’s life. It details the life of an odd, suburban man in his late 20’s who is dead set on becoming the next big rapper. The 31-year-old mentioned that his goal was always to navigate into the TV world as a comedian. Burd says the first season will tackle his startup as an artist. “Season 1 is all about getting legitimacy and going from being this YouTube sensation to people actually taking me seriously,” Burd says. He also says making TV and rapping are like “day and night.”
“The best part is all these random moments and notes that I’ve written down over the years getting turned into scenes,” he says. “You’re sitting there on set, and there’s like 75 people and millions of dollars of equipment capturing this one 20-second thing that was so funny to you four years ago. All these things that you’ve been thinking about for so long, getting created by some of the most talented people in the world is such a satisfying feeling.”
The rapper-actor says the show is a part of his “made it” moment. “It’s definitely one of the moments where I feel like I’ve made it in a way because one of my main goals got accomplished,” he says. “If I made a bad version of my show, I wouldn’t feel that way. But I feel like I’ve made a really good version of my show, so I’m very excited.” ’Dave’ premieres March 4 at 10 p.m. on #FXX, and will stream on Hulu.
