Dave Chappelle has inked a deal with the platform for four new comedy specials despite immense backlash from his last Netflix stand-up.
On Friday, Netflix announced “Chappelle’s Home Team,” which is the name of the comedy series. Each will show feature various comedians introduced by the veteran comic. The first will premiere on February 28th and feature Earthquake in part one titled “Earthquake: Legendary.” Another will highlight Donnell Rawlings, who was featured on another Chappelle special.
“The Chappelle Show” creator praised Earthquake and Rawlings, who are longtime friends of his.
“Anyone in the comedy community knows these names and knows their time to shine is long overdue. I am proud to be a part of this moment,” Chappelle raved about his comedic pals.
The news of additional specials may come as a surprise to some, considering that the 48-year-old faced widespread criticism from the LGBTQ+ community following comments made during October’s “The Closer.” Netflix employees even staged a protest. In the end, the streamer chose to stand with one of its highest earners. During the controversy, Netflix CEO Ted Sarandos said that people would have to accept that the special was “something on Netflix that you’re not going to like.”
