Internationally-celebrated Comedian Dave Chappelle will host a free block party, titled the “Gem City Shine,” for the people of Dayton, Ohio, following a mass shooting in the city that left nine people dead and 17 others hurt. Chapelle is infamously known for his block parties.
Chappelle, 45, spent part of his childhood in Ohio, and now, lives with his family in Yellow Springs, a village 20 miles outside of Dayton.
The Mayor of Dayton, Nan Whaley, tweeted that the ‘pop-up party” is being planned to take place on Sunday, August 25, tentatively from 4-10pm. The party is scheduled to be held in the Oregon District, a popular nightlife area where the Aug. 4 mass shooting unfolded.
A number of locally and nationally known acts are set to perform at the free event. The lineup for performers has not been publicized yet, although, with Chappelle’s star power, some big names could be involved, especially to give back to a community in need of being uplifted.
Although the event is free, tickets are required for entry. An organizer has said as many as 20,000 people are expected for the event. The event is also reportedly restricted only for legal residents of Dayton, OH and it’s surrounding areas.
“This event will honor the lives lost and to reclaim the community’s favorite places to shop, dine and enjoy time with family and friends,” the Facebook event page said.
