As the fifth day of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ federal sex trafficking trial came to a close, a bombshell moment unfolded in the courtroom: Dawn Richard, the singer and former Danity Kane member, testified that she personally witnessed Combs violently assaulting his then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura — over a plate of eggs.
Richard, who worked under Combs’ Bad Boy Records as a member of two groups including Danity Kane and Dirty Money, told jurors that the alleged attack happened in 2009 while she and fellow artist Kalenna Harper were visiting Combs’ Los Angeles home to work on music.
According to Richard, Cassie was cooking when Combs came downstairs “screaming, belligerent, asking where his food was.” He allegedly berated Cassie for not getting “anything right” and then attempted to hit her with a skillet of eggs.
“She fell to the ground,” Richard testified, adding that Combs began kicking her while she was down before “taking his arm around her neck and dragging her by the hair up the stairs.”
The courtroom fell silent as Richard recalled what happened next. The following day, Combs allegedly invited her and Harper to record music at his studio — and brushed off the previous night’s events.
“He said it was passion,” Richard told the jury. “And then he said where he comes from, people who say something can end up missing.”
The judge later dismissed the jury for the day while attorneys debated the relevance of Richard’s testimony. Defense attorney Marc Agnifilo asked for her statements to be removed from the record, calling them “unduly prejudicial” since Cassie never mentioned this specific incident during her own four days of testimony.
Prosecutors pushed back, saying the account was consistent with a pattern of intimidation and violence they say created the conditions for the more serious charges — including sex trafficking — that Combs now faces.
Combs has denied all allegations and pleaded not guilty. Testimony is expected to continue next week.
