The Bixby Police Department has determined that the death of Sherry Gamble Smith, the CEO and President of the Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce, resulted from a murder-suicide.
Last month, Bixby police found Sherry Gamble Smith dead, along with her husband Martin Everett Smith, who was injured inside their Oklahoma home on Wednesday, July 6, 2022. Martin died from a self-inflicted wound after being taken to the hospital. NewsOne 4 reports their deaths have been considered the result of a murder-suicide, as the two allegedly got into an argument before Martin shot and killed Sherry.
The news outlet reports there’s video footage showing Martin the night before spending a large amount of time alone in the couple’s home garage. The morning of the murder, police say Martin was seen taking a pistol from his garage, placing it into his waistband, and then going into the home. Right before killing Sherry, investigators claim Smith called a family member. He then shot himself, according to reports.
Police responded to the couple’s home at around 8 a.m. The Bixby Police Department is currently operating an investigation into the incident. Smith worked as the president and CEO of the Black Wall Street Chamber of Commerce; she previously worked for the Greenwood Chamber of Commerce.
She is called a “visionary” and community leader who would give her own money and food told help those in need,” by her friend Jamaal Dyer. “This is a huge loss for our community,” Dyer says Dyer.
