Deion Sanders is sharing his excitement about soon becoming a grandfather for the first time, following the confirmation from his daughter, Deiondra, that she is expecting a child with singer Jacquees.
“I haven’t digested that whole thing yet,” Sanders stated in an exclusive with PEOPLE.
“I’m proud of my baby that she’s at least waited until her thirties to give me this gift of life,” he says. “I’m happy about that, but I want to make sure she’s straight emotionally and psychologically as well.”
Over on Instagram, Deiondra shared a post with her fans, where she explained her choice to keep her baby despite the public relationship drama with Jacquees earlier this year.
“I’m not having my baby to keep a man. I am having my baby for all the times I was told I wouldn’t be able to,” she wrote. It was “not planned nor expected” the caption read.
“I’m having my baby for the four myomectomy surgeries I have had. I am having my baby for all the years I stayed on birth control even though it gave me breast tumors. I’m having my baby for all the doctors that told me I wouldn’t make it out of the first trimester.”
Last month, he also left a supportive and encouraging comment on her Instagram post when she shared her pregnancy news with fans.
“PREACH BABY PREACH, and u having this baby to make me a darn GRANDDADDY even though I’m YOUNG!” he wrote. “I Love u baby and I’m glad u said u ain’t having a baby to keep a man. You’ve always had a MAN in your life that u call DADDY & ain’t gon ever ever let u DOWN especially when I’m UP.”
