Delta Airlines is the third major US carrier to increase bag fees by 17%, adding $5 to the previous $30.
Major US airlines, such as American and United, raised their fees in response to fee hikes by Alaska Airlines and JetBlue, showcasing a trend known as herd instinct, where airlines tend to imitate each other’s pricing changes.
On Tuesday, the airline revealed that checking the initial bag on a domestic flight will now be priced at $35, while the charge for a second bag has risen from $40 to $45.
The airline stated that the hike is intended to offset unspecified industry cost increases.
Customers with status perks can still check their first bag for free, and first-class ticket holders can check two bags without charge.
