Passengers aboard Delta Flight 876 were forced to evacuate via emergency slides at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport on Monday morning after haze or smoke was observed inside the aircraft, according to Delta Air Lines and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA).
The Boeing 717, carrying 94 passengers, two pilots, and three flight attendants, was en route from Atlanta to Columbia, South Carolina, when the crew reported possible smoke in the flight deck. The aircraft returned to Atlanta, landing safely before passengers were assisted off the plane by Atlanta Fire Rescue.
“There is a moderate impact to operations at this time,” the airport stated, while Delta issued an apology, emphasizing that “nothing is more important than the safety of our customers and people.”
The FAA has launched an investigation into the incident.
