The Club 520 Podcast recently hosted NBA All-Star DeMarcus Cousins, and he and Jeff Teague took a trip down memory lane, sharing stories from their time in the league. One story that stood out was about a viral photo from Cousins’ time with the New Orleans Pelicans, which had everyone on set laughing.
During a game between Cousins’s Pelicans and the Minnesota Timberwolves, Jeff Teague, who was sidelined with an injury, was watching from the bench. Cousins, known as “Boogie,” asked Teague why he wasn’t playing. Teague explained he was injured, but Cousins jokingly suggested that Teague was actually afraid of facing point guard Rajon Rondo. This lighthearted exchange set the stage for the next game in Minnesota, where Teague was back on the court, ready to go up against Rondo, Cousins, and the Pelicans.
Teague recounted the moment on the podcast: “So I’m on the court, and I was like, ‘Yeah, moth&^&^&!’ I told KAT to bust his ass,” Teague said, laughing. “And [Cousins] said, ‘What?!’ Bro, there’s a picture of KAT posting up, and he’s looking at the bench like—I’m telling you, bro’s crazy.”
The viral picture shows Timberwolves big man Karl-Anthony Towns trying unsuccessfully to back down Cousins in the post. Until now, no one knew the story behind the photo. Co-host DJ Wells asked Teague to confirm if he was the one who instigated the situation that led to the viral moment. Laughing, Teague blamed Cousins, saying it was his fault it all happened.
“It’s him, bro,” Cousins joked back. “No, it’s you. It’s always you, bro. It’s always Jeff, dog. The mastermind.”
Teague continued, explaining that once Cousins got the ball on offense, things got even tougher for the young Towns, who was still adjusting to the league at the time.
“Then [Cousins] gets on offense like I told y’all, and he starts on Cuz,” Teague said. “Cuz goes to the basket, and KAT just wraps him up. They’re like, ‘Switch, Taj! Taj!’ And [Cousins] was like, ‘He can’t run, Thibs; he’s gotta guard somebody.’ I was like, oh, this dude is crazy.”
While Towns has significantly improved as a defender since those early years, this story adds a hilarious layer to the viral picture. Check out the clip from the podcast to see the full exchange.
