The NBA All-Star reserves were announced Thursday evening via TNT and very quickly it became evident that many of the public’s top picks had been snubbed. But with Kobe Bryant being out of the game and off of the team following surgery on a torn rotator cuff, there proved to be an open spot in the West. Now when it came to the West it seemed that most people had the same idea on those who should have made the team but didn’t and among the top contenders were Demarcus Cousins of the Kings and Damian Lillard of the Trail Blazers.
Well Friday evening NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced that they had gone with the big man and Cousins had gotten the offer to appear in his first All Star game. Cousins currently ranks 5th in the league in scoring averaging 23 points per game and third in rebounding averaging 12 per game. Friday night Cousins expressed how shocked he was to receive the news. He even admitted that he had just texted Damian Lillard the night before and told him how sure he was that Dame would get the spot in place of Kobe. “Man you know you’re going to make this team!” Cousins expressed in his conversation with Lillard. “It’s just crazy how things worked out” He said as he rounded out his feelings on him actually being the one to make the team. Cousins also referenced how excited his mother was as he immediately called and delivered the news to her after finding out late Friday evening.
Cousins has been having the best season of his career and doesn’t appear to be falling off anytime soon. I know he’ll make a great addition to the Western All Star team. As for the starting position that Kobe held, it is still up to Golden State head Coach Steve Kerr (who will be the head coach of the West) to fill the spot. We’ll have to wait and see who he chooses and watch on February 15 to see how the game unfolds.
