Calls about the ongoing conflict between Palestine and Israel are starting to overwhelm Democratic offices.
According to the HuffPost, multiple Democratic posts across the country have received calls from President Joe Biden supporters, urging him to fully endorse a cease-fire. With an outpouring of callers moved by the violence, many staffers are also becoming frustrated with Biden’s response.
“This building is not listening. I’ve never seen such a disconnect between where voters and constituents are and where Congress is, and that’s saying something because there’s always a disconnect,” one Democratic aide stated to the HuffPost.
On Thursday, Biden said, “None. No possibility,” when he was asked whether he felt there was a chance for a cease-fire. However, that same day, the White House did share that Israel would permit “daily pauses” in the fighting. This will reportedly allow civilians to seek shelter. However, a separate employee says the move is simply “cold comfort.” In the early days of the war, employees were even advised to let calls from concerned citizens “go to voicemail.”
This response certainly won’t help Biden in the forthcoming election, with his strategy leaving a bad taste in supporters’ mouths. A survey conducted by the Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research showed that 46% of Democrats were not pleased with Biden’s conflict management. In comparison, 50% believe he is doing well given the circumstances. The cease-fire resolution has only been signed by 18 House Democrats, though others have expressed support for iron their own.
As for now, the calls are continuing to pile up, demanding a stop to the chaos.
